Forex Hours

Futures Hours are so confusing. Coming from Forex.

So Globex hours open 6PM on Sunday then Close on Friday 4:15PM. There is a Halt? Is this a daily halt? Everyday Monday to Friday the market Halts for 15 mins, 4:15 to 4:30? So Regular Trading Hours are when to when? This would then tell Overnight trading hours ? And what is Open Cry? I believe then Initial Balance will be derived from the Regular Trading hours? And all this is supposed to be in New York times or Chicago times?
Forex hours are so simple, I trade the London FX market. Are the currency futures open then? Is there some visual time thing like the one in Forex factory?
Am so confused.

What is Forex - Terminology

https://preview.redd.it/pmjpy8sqh1x51.jpg?width=580&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b02715d6d6f153592a967f577c18578363ca731c
The FOREX market is the largest financial market in the world. On a daily basis, trillions of dollars are traded in different currencies around the world.
Being FOREX the basis for international capital transactions, its liquidity and volume are much greater than any other financial market. It is estimated that the average volume traded by the world's largest stock exchange, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in a full month, is equal to the volume traded daily in the Forex currency market. In addition, it is estimated that this volume will increase by 25% annually.
80% of transactions are between the US dollar (USD), the euro (EUR), the yen (JPY), the British pound (GBP), the Swiss franc (CHF), and the Australian dollars (AUD) and Canadian (CAD).

What is traded in the Forex market?

We could just say that money. Trading in FOREX simultaneously involves buying one currency (for example euros) and selling another (for example US dollars). These simultaneous purchase and sale operations are carried out through online brokers. Operations are specified in pairs; for example the euro and the dollar (EUR / USD) or the pound sterling and the Yen (GBP / JPY).
These types of transactions can be somewhat confusing at first since nothing is being purchased physically. Basically, each currency is tied to the economy of its respective country and its value is a direct reflection of people's perception of that economy. For example, if there is a perception that the economy in Japan is going to weaken, the Yen is likely to be devalued against other currencies. In other words, people are going to sell Yen and they are going to buy currencies from countries where the economy is or will be better than Japan.
In general, the exchange of one currency for another reflects the condition of the health of the economy of that country with respect to the health of the economy of other countries.
Unlike other financial markets such as the stock market, the currency market does not have a fixed location like the largest exchanges in the world. These types of markets are known as OTC (Over The Counter). Transactions take place independently around the world, mainly over the Internet, and prices can vary from place to place.
Due to its decentralized nature, the foreign exchange market is operated 24 hours a day from Monday to Friday.

Forex Trading Basics - Basic Forex Terminology

As with any new skill that is learned, it is also necessary to learn its terminology. There are certain terms that you must know before you start trading Forex. Here are the main ones.

• Major and minor currencies

The 8 most widely used currencies (USD, EUR, JPY, GBP, CHF, CAD, NZD, and AUD) are known as “ major currencies ”. All other currencies are called " minor currencies ." You don't need to worry about minor currencies, as you probably won't start trading them for now. The USD, EUR, JPY, GBP, and CHF currencies are the most popular and most liquid currencies on the market.

• Base currency

The base currency is the first currency in any currency pair. It shows how much the base currency is worth against the second currency. For example, if the USD / CHF has a rate of 1.6350, it means that 1 USD is worth 1.6350 CHF. In the forex market, the US dollar is in many cases the base currency to make quotes, the quotes are expressed in units of $ 1 on the other currency of the pair.
In some other pairs, the base currency is the British pound, the euro, the Australian dollar, or the New Zealand dollar.

• Quoted currency

The quote currency is the second currency in the currency pair. This is often referred to as a "pip-currency" and any unrealized gains or losses are expressed in this currency.

• Pip

A pip is the smallest unit of the price of any currency. Almost all currencies consist of 5 significant digits and most pairs have the decimal point immediately after the first digit. For example EUR / USD = 1.2538, in this case, a pip is the smallest change in the fourth decimal space, which is, 0.0001.
A notable exception is the USD / JPY pair where the pip equals $ 0.01.

• Purchase price (bid)

The buying price (bid) is the price at which the market is ready to buy a specific currency in the Forex market. At this price, one can sell the base currency. The purchase price is displayed on the left side.
For example, in GBP / USD = 1.88112 / 15, the selling price is 1.8812. This means that you can sell a GPB for $ 1.8812.

• Sale Price (ask)

The asking price is the price at which the market is ready to sell a specific currency pair in the Forex market. At this price, you can buy the base currency. The sale price is displayed on the right-hand side.
For example, at EUR / USD = 1.2812 / 15, the selling price here is 1.2815. This means that you can buy one euro for $ 1.2815. The selling price is also called the bid price.

• Spread

All Forex quotes include two prices, the bid (offer) and the ask (demand).
The bid is the price at which the broker is willing to buy the base currency in exchange for the quoted currency. This means that the bid is the price at which you can sell.
The ask is the price at which the broker is willing to sell the base currency in exchange for the quoted currency. This means that the ask is the price at which you will buy. The difference between the bid and the ask is popularly known as the spread and is the consideration that the online broker receives for its services.

• Transaction costs

The transaction cost, which could be said to be the same as the Spread, is calculated as: Transaction Cost = Ask - Bid. It is the number of pips that are paid when opening a position. The final amount also depends on the size of the operation.
It is important to note that depending on the broker and the volatility, the difference between the ask and the bid can increase, making it more expensive to open a trade. This generally happens when there is a lot of volatility and little liquidity, as happens during the announcement of some relevant economic data.

• Cross currency

A cross-currency is any pair where one of the currencies is the US dollar (USD). These pairs show an erratic price behavior when the operator opens two operations in US dollars. For example, opening a long trade to buy EUR / GPB is equivalent to buying EUR / USD and selling GPB / USD. Cross-currency pairs generally carry a higher transaction cost.

• Margin

When you open a new account margin with a Forex broker, you must deposit a minimum amount of money to your broker. This minimum varies depending on each broker and can be as low as € / $ 100 at higher amounts.
Each time a new trade is executed a percentage of your account margin balance will be the initial margin required for a new trade based on the underlying currency pair, current price, and the number of units (or lots) of the trade. .
For example, let's say you open a mini account which gives you a leverage of 1: 200 or a margin of 0.5%. Mini accounts work with mini lots. Suppose a mini lot equals $ 10,000. If you are about to open a mini lot, instead of having to invest $ 10,000, you will only need $ 50 ($ 10,000 x 0.5% = $ 50).

• Leverage

Leverage is the ratio of the capital used in a transaction to the required deposit. It is the ability to control large amounts of dollars with relatively less capital. Leverage varies drastically depending on the broker, it can go from 1: 2 to even 1: 2000. The most common level of leverage in Forex can currently be around 1: 200.

• Margin + leverage = dangerous combination

Trading currencies on margin allows you to increase your buying power. This means that if you have $ 5,000 in account margin that allows you a 1: 100 leverage, you can then buy $ 500,000 in foreign exchange as you only have to invest a percentage of the purchase price. Another way of saying this is that you have $ 500,000 in purchasing power.
With more purchasing power you can greatly increase your potential profits without an outlay of cash. But be careful, working with a high margin increases your profits but also your losses if the trade does not progress in your favor.

UK resident got scammed to send money to an Australian bank account. What I did and what to do next?

Hello, I live in England and this is a long post about how I got scammed, presenting my story and asking for advice. Much appreciated to all who go through all of it and send their ideas.
Also posted in AusLegal here: https://www.reddit.com/AusLegal/comments/iujgpq/uk_resident_got_scammed_to_send_money_to_an/
So I met a person online, and after chatting a bit she started showing me her gold trading profits. At first I didn't care that much, but she kept showing me profits and I said I wish I knew how to trade like that. She puts me in contact with this person, who is supposed to teach me how to trade.
This teacher tells me that I will start with simulated gold trading, and after some time I would move on to real trading. After a couple of days of trading she says I'm ready to trade for real, I say I need more time to do simulated trading. We do another day of simulated trading and she says I'm ready and I should start trading with real money.
Hindsight is 20/20, I can't believe what I was thinking. But I did do some checks on these people, like I aske them for pictures of themselves and I google image searched them. No results, not stock images, so I'm like, okay, a good sign.
I ask the first person to have a phone call to talk, we do. Okay, fair enough.
I ask the first person to send me the link to her design company that she said she owns, and she sends it over. Site is in Chinese but it's filled with a lot of images of homebuilding and some English sentences about home design. I ask her for more photos and it seems okay.
I do the same with the "teacher". Google image search, no stock images, no results. I google the platform she's asking me to open an account on, can't find anything about it saying it's a scam. The reviews for the iphone app are mostly 4-5 stars, with people in the reviews complaining that the previous version of the app was better.
So after all this, on the 11th of September I transfer the minimum needed to start investing, USD 10,000. I do this by using Transferwise, so I transfer the money in UK pounds to Transferwise (I live in the UK), the money is converted by Transferwise to USD and is send to the scammer's account to an Australian bank on Friday evening.
I sleep on it, and next day morning I start panicking, I think my instincts started kicking in, and I do some more research online and I found something similar, not exactly the same scam, but something similar where you meet somebody online, start talking, some people even met with these people, and then they say can teach you or know somebody that can teach you to trade (gold, bitcoin, forex, etc). At that point I really panicked and I realised I got scammed.
I try to reach Transferwise, but since it was Saturday, you could only reach them by email, couldn't even call them.
I call the bank in Australia, I tell them what happened, I was scammed and the scammers account is with them and I give them the details of the bank account and everything. So literally after a few hours of the money leaving Trasnferwise I contacted the receiving bank. They told me they will pass it on to the Financial Crime team and look into it.
I file a report with Action Fraud in the UK, I sent the report number to my bank, to the Australian bank and to Transferwise, but to Transferwise only on Monday when I can contact them again.
I search online for some advice, and everybody thinks the best solution is to keep contacting the receiving bank as they could block the account, or the transaction and it could bounce back to Transferwise so I keep doing that. The receiving bank in Australia tells me to contact Transferwise and have them raise a fraud report and to get in contact with the Australian bank.
After numerouse calls with Transferwise asking them to contact the receiving bank where I was told there's nothing they can do after the money has left Transferwise, I resort to calling the bank in Australia again. By this point I raised a cyber fraud report with the Australian police as well and sent the report number to the Australian bank.
I ask the bank in Australia what is there to do, if they will deny the transfer or do something so that money does not leave the Australian bank account, and they said the Financial Crime team is looking into it, but I could also ask Transferwise to raise a recall request and to contact them, but I say I already did but Transferwise keeps telling me they can't do that. The person from the Australian bank tells me it seems like Transferwise is giving me wrong information.
So I decide to call Transferwise again. I reach out to somebody, and they explain it still cannot be done. I'm almost begging them to do it, but they say it cannot be done. I start searching online of any events with TW and recall requests, and I found something where it said Transferwise doesn't want to do it because there's slim chance of getting the money back so they tell customers it cannot be done.
I call Transferwise again and push and complain that I think they're just telling me they can't do it just to get rid of me and the person I'm talking to this time says it can actually be done and she'll do that request for me, and she apologises for her colleagues telling me the wrong information previously. I call the Australian bank again to let them know that Transferwise said they will do the recall and if there is anything I can do. They tell me best thing is for me to keep talking to Transferwise, as the Australian bank has done everything it can.
Now, Transferwise shows you an estimation in days of how long a transfer will take. I did the transfer on Friday the 11th, and Transferwise estimated that the transfer would be completed by the 16th at 9:30 pm UK time. So doing all this I had some hope that something can happen. Mind you, I called the receiving bank a few hours after the transfer was done by Transferwise, and by their estimate had around 4-5 days until the transfer was complete.
I feel like I wasted precious time because Transferwise was not helpful at all, from the start when I raised the scam with them telling me there's nothing they can do, to the moment I had to make around 5 calls just to get them to do the recall request.
The 16th passes, the transfer appears complete in Transferwise and I get a message from the scammer that the funds have arrived and I can start trading. I didn't block them because I didn't want to freak them out and withdraw the money immediately it hits their account.
I posted my long story here to see if there is something I can do. I had hopes that the Australian bank would block the withdrawal and it would bounce back, or they would block the scammer's account and my money would not be withdrawn and the recall would go through. I also have some hopes that based on what the scammer said today, the money is still in the Australian bank account.
I feel like I acted pretty promptly after I realised I got scammed. Contacted the receiving bank, my bank, Transferwise and the authorities both in the UK and Australia.
I don't know what else I could have done to get a more positive outcome, but now I'm asking you, the people of this subreddit, is there anything else I can do? Is there a chance the money is still in the scammer's account and the Australian bank has blocked it?
Do you guys think Transferwise didn't treat me properly by dismissing me off the bat, and only helping me with the recall request after around 10 calls and pushing?
Any advice would be much appreciated. I know I was foolish, I should have trusted my instincts, but I feel I also took some verification steps that I knew from the internet and I contacted every instituion asap after I realised I was scammed, so a few hours after sending the money.
TL;DR I got scammed into sending money to an Australian bank account from the UK. What can I do now?

TSM and Me 2020

TSM has been on my radar since I started saving to invest in 2018 because of AMD / GlobalFoundries. Really interesting business model for Semis AMD has.
In 2019, you couldn't get away from heating up of the trade war. Congress began debating SAR for HK around the end of Hong Kong's "2019 Summer of Love" and rumors of what happens in the "re-education" camps / "Where did the Falun Gong practitioners go?" This is important because of the SWIFT system of world banking. HK is how they get dollars.
Then in November of 2019, this happened..

Arizona plant news is where the tin foil ends and the conviction began for me. The Foundry is basically THE corporation of Taiwan. The Great Cheetoh has been making deals around the world, and technically Taiwan isn't China. We have recent armament deals with Taiwan and Japan to prove it.
https://youtu.be/TLKt9yPb-f0
Why not?? Seemed like the American thing to do and there is a republican in office hell-bent on decoupling US communications tech from the CCP aka ROC.
In Feb / March... Rona. April the economic fallout, news about bad PPE and tests from China being sold to Italy. In May all the US boats in Taiwanese waters and the rhetoric worldwide basically reflecting that the world isn't happy with the CCP.
I had the balance for a RH call and it made more sense than an airline play at the time, so i got in.
Anti CCP rhetoric started heating up and bi-partisan on the YouTube's, by the way, it seems 2020 is the year NBC (Comcast) discovered ad-revenue. Thank you Lester.
At this point morning wood for TSM was a regular thing, so i set my limits on call options for both accounts, and incorporated into the LT DRIP. Thank you Papa Powell. I'm still poor, couldn't have done it without you...
Then it seemed to be heating up at the end of May. Everyone is like WTF 'mate on the "One Belt. One Road." Initiative, both the geographical and digital. People are really starting to report on not-so-great stories out of China, and not just tinfoil or Epoch Times channels.
Lot of shade being thrown on China tech, and things are heating up in S China Sea.

...looks like Chy-na is on everyone's shit list, including Australia. Forex folks know how dope-tied the Aussie's and Kiwis are to CCP trade relations.
The rumor was potential decouple from China. I mean the world is kinda dope-tied to Santa's little elves. I just realized how weird Christmas will be...
I bought my shares for both accounts as per the voodoo ritual of purchasing at least 1 stock of a long term call strategy. Got my hand deep (for me) in the cookie jar May and June.

Third week of July called a bull flag on hourly:

July 24th, I got filled to the teeth in RH and my now free play in Webull was up 1,600%.

THEN July 27th, I closed my "free play" in Webull at $1,250. A little over 3,000% between 2 contracts that cost $75 total.
Along the way, i picked up RH tendies and rebalanced the cash / bought more contracts and shares. They're officially part of the DRIP.

Related post I made last week regarding TSM and INTC. Any thoughts on how US semi production will play out for them?

Last week, The Fool confirmed many of the LT bias I had been building up on a win for The Foundry since November. All hype, or real talk?

Financial analysis- This guy is boring af, but he goes through the numbers that no one likes to read, records in mobile, and is cool enough to zoom in on what he is talking about.

Can anyone see a downside other than "COVID CLAP Trumps all"? Maybe I've been chewing too much YouTube tinfoil on lunch, but the limit orders that are closing 930-4pm are making me think I've hit the Autistic Lottery. Wish I had bought more.
Friday, all I could see was a bull flag on the 4hr and 30min charts. Monday 8/03 it hasn't shit the bed at 11am EST. Maybe thats just the tin foil talking again and this is the ceiling.

Still in, and potentially interested in more contracts.

Useful trading terminology. Part 1.

Useful trading terminology. Part 1.
Hi everyone! Today I'd like to present you some necessary words of trading terminology that will help you to be a good trader and to understand a special service for a trading vfxAlert.
Day Trading
It is defined as the straightforward take action of getting shares of the inventory together with the purpose of promoting them on the very same time.
Professional Day Trader
A specialist working day forex trader can informally be regarded as somebody who day time transactions for a lifestyle, but coming from a regulatory standpoint, it means a forex trader who seems to be certified with either their Series 6, 7, 63, 65, or 66. Investors who definitely are certified pay increased service fees for market details. That is why whenever you open up a merchant account you will need to tell them if you are a specialist (registered) dealer. Working day investors are certainly not required to be registered if they are buying and selling their particular money.
Pattern Day Trader Rules
The Pattern Working day Forex trader (PDT) Principle claims that if a dealer will take 3 or maybe more time investments in a 5 working day period, they may be a day forex trader and so they must keep a lowest account balance of $25,000 USD. Numerous traders who are unable to preserve that equilibrium will business at either a Prop Company (see below), or at Suretrader / Tradezero.
Swing Trading
Golf swing Forex trading, contrary to Day Buying and selling, demands immediately maintain instances. Swing dealers holds stocks and shares for at least 1 night time, but perhaps a lot of times. These are very simple-term ventures.
Stock Market Hours
The current market is open from 9:30am -4pm EST Monday –Friday. You can find vacations when the market is sealed or shuts at 1pm. Pre-marketplace and after-hrs trading is accessible but liquidity is often extremely low since there aren’t a lot of purchasers or retailers buying and selling after hours.
Bull or Bullish
This term identifies a powerful market place of stocks and shares upgrading. This could be accustomed to reference a particular placement the investor takes. When they are bullish, they anticipate the stock to increase.
Bear or Bearish
This expression means a weakened market place. This means investors believe the buying price of stocks and shares or possibly a certain inventory will likely be heading down. When they are bearish, they can offer their bullish roles as well as acquire brief positions.
Initial Public Offering (IPO)
Whenever a organization does an IPO, they offer a set amount of gives to the available marketplace to boost money. This might be, as an example, ten million reveals. If those shares cost at $10/reveal, they are going to increase $100 million in the IPO. This money receives put in to the firm for long term expansion (creating industrial facilities, ideal investments, and so forth).
Float
Drift refers to the variety of exceptional offers accessible to business. Once the company do the original IPO, they released reveals. That quantity is generally the drift, although there are 3 methods the quantity of offers can change. The Float is equal to the availability level. Stocks with restricted provide and high demand are the type that relocate down or up the quickest.
Share Buy Back
A Reveal Acquire Back system happens when an organization purchases rear gives that have been distributed throughout the IPO. Using this method they may be lowering the amount of reveals accessible to industry and everybody positioning reveals in the business will find their gives surge in value. Discuss Buy Backs will decrease the float.
Secondary Offering
A additional providing is an supplying which is provided following the First General public Supplying. Even though an organization functions multiple additional products, they may be always called second (not thirdly, 4th, etc). A secondary offering will raise money for that firm by offering a lot more offers. This improves the flow of shares in the marketplace and lessens the price of those shares. This is certainly generally not one thing long term buyers want to see.
Stock Splits
Stock Split can change the price tag on a stock. The apple company managed a 7:1 stock split. The $700 carry increased all gives by 7 to lower the cost of the carry to $100. This means in the event you held 1,000 offers at $700, congratulations, you very own 7,000 at $100. This increased the drift. Some firms will do a Turn back stock divide. A 10:1 reverse inventory split can take a stock buying and selling at $1.00 and turn it into $10.00. Should you be previously positioning 1,000 reveals at $1.00, you will basically be keeping 100 offers at $10 after the divided.

The prime minister will announce a six-month competition among 19 cities of Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provinces, he added. -Sindh govt invites bids for Dhabeji SEZ
The Sindh government has launched the well-connected Dhabeji Special Economic Zone in district Thatta near Port Qasim, according to a statement issued on Monday. In this connection, the Sindh Economic Zones Management Company (SEZMC), being the provincial SEZ custodian, has invited proposals for the development and operation of Dhabeji project through an advertisement published in leading national and international newspapers.
Dhabeji SEZ was highlighted in the recent meeting of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Joint Working Group on Industrial Cooperation. The senior officials of China’s National Development Reforms Commission (NDRC) appreciated the Sindh government on the progress made so far. The Sindh government launched the project through an international competitive bidding process as a build-up to the upcoming 10th Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) meeting between China and Pakistan, which would be held next month.

****UPDATE: I decided to post that conversation out of frustration in the moment but since there's been so much support and feedback here's some more details.
The app was suspended on 5/30, this was the email:
After review, Bit Trainer – A Live Cryptocurrency Simulator, has been suspended and removed from Google Play as a policy strike because it violates the spampolicy by posting repetitive content.
Next Steps
  1. Read through the Spampolicy for more details and examples of policy violations.
  2. Make sure your app is compliant with all other policies listed in the Developer Program Policies. Remember that additional enforcement could occur if there are further policy issues with your apps.
  3. Sign in to your Play Consoleand submit the policy compliant app using a new package name and a new app name.
Additional suspensions of any nature may result in the termination of your developer account, and investigation and possible termination of related Google accounts. If your account is terminated, payments will cease and Google may recover the proceeds of any past sales and/or the cost of any associated fees (such as chargebacks and transaction fees) from you.
If you’ve reviewed the policy and feel this suspension may have been in error, please reach out to our policy support team. One of my colleagues will get back to you within 2 business days.
Regards,
The Google Play Review Team
THIS WAS MY RESPONSE:
Our app was suspended for "Repetitive content violates our Spampolicy "
Our app is a educational tool. It is designed to help people learn how to trade cryptocurrency without the risk. it simulates the process using real time prices. As of right now our app does not contain any posting of "content". It is currently being used in Old Dominion University as part of their crypto currency curriculum.
BASED ON THE SPAM POLICY PAGE
-Message Spam, does not apply becuse our app does not send SMS, email, or other messages.
-Webviews and Affiliate Spam, our app does not drive affiliate traffic to a website or provide a webview of a website. every single page in our app is designed from scratch and the information provided on each page is obtained via the exchanges api based on thier guidelines.
-Wizard Spam, our app was not created by an automated tool or wizard service. Again every single page was designed from scratch by our team and built the Monaca platform.
-Guides, our app is not a guide and serves no ads.
Our app contains 8 pages.
  1. Watchlist, a page to add the cryptocurrencies that you want to keep track of, similar to dozens of other apps on the market like tab trader, blockfolio or cointracker.
  2. Trading, similar to Forex Game, the main function of our app. It let's you use the credits we provide to simulate purchasing the available cryptocurrency of your choice.
  3. Selling, where you sell what you purchased on the trading screen
  4. Leaderboard, all users are displayed and ranked based on how well they do trading.
  5. Wallet, this is where you see all of the currency you are holding, and your transaction history.
  6. Global Market, This screen shows all the coins on the market based on Coinmarketcap API
  7. Earn Credits, where you can play a simple game to earn more credit when you run out.
  8. Coin converter, a simple calculator that let's you get the values of different currencies, no different from any other cryptocurrency converter on the market.
THEY RESPONDED WITH:
Hello,
Thanks for contacting the Google Play team.
After review, we've confirmed our initial decision and we won't be reinstating your app Bit Trainer – A Live Cryptocurrency Simulator at this time.
Repetitive content violates ourSpampolicy and is prohibited on Google Play.
Developers are important partners in maintaining a great user experience on Google Play and we appreciate your cooperation.
If you do choose to re-publish a new version of your app, please review the Developer Program Policiesto make sure your app is compliant with our policies.
Regards,LindaThe Google Play Team
After that I wrote back with a bunch of question, several times, had about 5 live chat sessions that went the exact same way.
UPDATE: I sent two messages one to the general help and the second one was directly back to Linda who had responded to the first suspension appeal and here are the responses I got.
FROM MY MESSAGE TO LINDA: Hi developers at Hashtiv, Thanks again for contacting Google Play Team.

AND THE OTHER: Hi there,
I'm happy to help you with issues related to publishing and distributing apps through the Play Console. At this time, my team is not able to provide information about policy enforcement decisions. Forex Market Operating hours

From Monday morning in Asia to Friday afternoon in New York, theforexmarket is a 24-hour market, meaning it does not close overnight. This differs from markets such as equities, bonds, and commodities, which all close for a period of time, generally in the New York late afternoon. However, as with most things there are exceptions. Some emerging market currencies closing for a period of time during the trading day.

Beginners start here

Hey everyone. A while back I made the decision to moderate this subreddit because I was once in your shoes. I honestly did not know where to begin. I would type in “daytrading” in google and come up with so many companies trying to sell me the dream. “Make $$$ while you sleep!” “Look at how much I made today!!” etc. I wanted to make this post to first give new people a place where to start and to even offer some resources that can get you started in the right direction. If I have anything else to add I will add it here.
  1. Open up a papertrading account with Think or Swim. It is free and you can get live data just by requesting it from support. All you have to do is ask them to add live data to your papertrading account. Do not pay monthly for any papertrading account. There are a lot of free videos out there that can help you get started with Think or Swim. The program looks complicated at first but it is very powerful. I spent a few days with the program and at the end of the week I was fairly comfortable with understanding where everything was. I have never had a 60-day limit with my papertrading account by the way. https://www.thinkorswim.com/t/pm-registration.html Start here and start taking trades! It is all fake money and will give you some insight into how the program works as well as how the markets move.
One other tip for setting up your papertrading account is to only set it up with a reasonable amount of money. I know a lot of papertrading accounts give you 100k right off the bat but realistically, how many of us are going to have that much money to start out with? Set it to something more reasonable like 10-20k if you are trading forex (or even less if all you have is 1-5k to trade with) or 25k+ if you are going to daytrade stocks only because the regulations require you to have at least 25k in your account at all times to daytrade (In this case, I would probably give yourself 30k just to be safe).
If you are looking for a stock screener, ThinkorSwim has a pretty good one. A personal favorite of mine is www.FINVIZ.com which has an awesome screener for finding different chart patterns and conditions (such as prices crossing above 20 bar EMA, trending up, etc)
Think or Swim has stocks, forex, futures, and options. Options are an entirely different beast all together but stocks, forex, and futures are all "yes-no" type of trading while options give you a little more leeway with your mistakes. If you are interested in learning about options, message me and I can help guide you with the right direction and best resources I used to learn options.
EDIT: Due to the amount of PM's I was getting, I have decided to post the options course I started with here https://www.udemy.com/learn-options-trading-courses/ You shouldn't pay more than 10 bucks for it as Udemy does a ton of sales throughout the year. You can also just do a "Udemy coupon" search on google and see what you pull up. Its about 10 hours worth of content and in my opinion it is worth every penny if you are wanting to learn more about options. There are a ton of other great classes on Udemy as well for learning just about anything. Just make sure to read the reviews!
Stocks is kind of the well known market for new comers but I would argue that Forex can also just as easily be traded by a newcomer. Also the benefit of trading Forex is that there is no commission off the bat. Most brokers will charge what is called a spread of some number of pips that you are essentially paying back.
Futures trade in ticks and each tick nets you a gain of some amount or a loss of some amount so I do not suggest any new person to jump into futures until you understand the way markets work. Futures charge commission on each contract you buy or sell. It can be sort of related to Forex since a tick and a pip are essentially the same.
The huge benefit to trading Futures and Forex is that there is NO pattern day trading rule. This means you can buy and sell as many times as you want without being flagged for not having 25k in your account.
  1. Tradimo is a great resource for getting your feet wet with technical analysis. It is free and shows you the ropes with how you can start looking at prices and charts: https://learn.tradimo.com/courses
  2. If there is ever a company you want to pay to help you learn, please do your research first. Type in the company’s name along with “review” at the end of your search and make your educated decision off of that. A lot of these companies have amazing advertising but will never teach you the right way to trade. A lot of them are scams too. I read that there was one trading system which the guy had the secrets of the “code of trading” and only he knew the code but would sell it to you for hundreds of dollars. So many people come into trading with high expectations that if I just pay this company to teach me, I can be like them when in reality that may never happen. Always look at their testimonials with a grain of salt. Read the reviews just like you would on amazon for buying a product. I also like to type in the company's name and add "scam" at the end to see if I get any hits on that. Read the good reviews but also the bad to understand the bigger picture here. Very few will actually teach you how to trade. Also, Reddit is a great place to read up on things like this too. Just add "Reddit" at the end of your search and read up on other users reviews.
Investimonials is also a good place to use as well (but do not use it as your only review source!!! Fake reviews are everywhere) http://www.investimonials.com So before you drop that 1-2k on a course, make sure you do your homework. Don't be fooled by smooth advertising.
  1. A high probability indicator or a holy grail strategy is not out there. If it was, everyone would be using it and making money. And if there does happen to be one, do you really think anyone will want to share it? The only way to get good at trading is to be able to read the charts and read where prices are going. This is through support and resistance and understanding channels. I cannot recommend Mack’s price action YouTube channel enough. https://www.youtube.com/usePATsTrading I am a firm believer that price action is the basis for understanding price movement. Reading an indicator may help but you should not rely on solely indicators to guide you with trading as they may give you a signal to buy when you are at a major resistance level or sell when you are at a major support, both of which could burn you.
  2. My only other advice is to look into markets that let you maximize profits. For some, it is not possible to buy 1000 shares of Apple. While trading low priced stocks lets you buy hundreds and maybe even thousands of shares at once, those stocks are too unpredictable because they can be influenced by individuals who do what is called a "pump and dump" schemes. Plus they can be difficult to read as far as what they are going to be doing next (going up or going down). My recommendation (and it is only my recommendation so only use this as guidance to make your own decision) would be to look into trading forex if you do not have a lot to start out with as some brokers (like FXCM) allow you to buy "micro" lots which let you invest as little as 100 dollars in some cases and have a much better chance of working in your favor due to the amount of people trading the same instrument. Note: There are some discussions about forex market makers adjusting the markets so you get stopped out prematurely. While I have not experienced this, it could theoretically happen? So if you do decide to trade Forex make sure you pick your broker carefully and again read the reviews!
EDIT: I have read that what I mentioned above about Forex is outdated and the brokers are under stricter regulations. Do your own investigation and do not let what I said steer you away from trading forex if you really want to. The big Forex brokers you are able to open an account with in the US are FXCM, Oanda, and Forex.com. You have a lot more options if you are in another country.
EDIT 2: Well it looks like FXCM may get banned from having clients in the US. Apparently they took some trades against their clients to profit on their end and have been using clients accounts to fund their extra expenses. Tread on your own risk.
  1. Above all, do not invest money that you are not willing to lose. I cannot emphasize this enough. Work on a simulator until you feel that your strategy works. This means putting in the time to sit down and analyze every trade you took which worked as well as the ones that didn't work. You need to go back over your mistakes and review why your trade did not work the way you thought it would. Was it because you bought at a high and sold at a low? Was it because you bought at a major resistance level thinking the stock would still go up? Was it because you were impulsive and entered in too early? Was it because you were too slow and entered in too late? This is the most important part about learning how to trade. Putting in the time and work to analyze what you did right and what you did wrong. You will never get better if you do not do this.
  2. Consider subscribing to a free daily financial newsletter such as The Morning Brew. It’s a free subscription that is delivered Monday through Friday to your email before the markets open around 5-6 am central time. It summarizes the big financial topics of the morning in short easy to read sections that you can read over a cup of brew.
I wouldn’t say this is essential for daytrading but it’s nice to read if you are wanting to stay up to date on the financial markets as they will write about companies and stocks to look out for. It’s also not spammy or filled with ads though there are one or two that are listed as “sponsored”. They don’t typically put out a weekend read but instead send it M-F.
https://www.morningbrew.com/?kid=08944ba0
I want to make this subreddit not only as a resource for newcomers but also for those who wish to improve their skills with learning how to day trade. I do not want this subreddit to become spam and companies trying to sell dreams. We all need to keep a realistic vision on what learning the market entails because this is a journey. No one becomes a doctor in a day or even a week and you should expect the same becoming a trader. Making consistent money in the markets can be very challenging and most wont ever make it, but it can be very satisfying once things start to click and you can live a very different life if this ever happens.

The Italian Referendum ELI5

SO
This weekend, Sunday Dec 4 is the "Italian Referendum", a much hyped vote being put to the Italian populace concerning a large amount of varied and confusing proposed changes to the laws and constitution of Italy. In the "news", this referendum has been pounded with as much drama as is needed to get clicks. Here at /Forex, we recognize that these drama generating tactics will obscure what is likely the reality, so we wanted to give you a heads up on what to expect.
The short version is that the current Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and his center-left Democratic Party are pushing a bill to amend the Italian Constitution to allow for more centralization of Government. The Italian Gov't is very decentralized, and has been so since WWII, a response to the conglomeration of power that Il Duce Mussolini sought for a strong, centralized, Fascist government. Beyond this, it gets confusing, muddy. Basically, there is a push to make the power shift from the provinces to the center in Rome. Mr Renzi has stated that these reforms are necessary for the well being of Italy, and that he will resign if they are not passed. If you want your eyes to glaze over read the wiki page.
Where "Italexit" comes in is here: Theoretically (modified thanks to information from Cmossensor and enivid)
However, leaving the EU is not as easy for the Italians as the media has made it out to be.
There is a great analysis here at Business Insider as to why; I'll quote the key parts:
Morgan Stanley staff members Daniele Antonucci and Phanikiran Naraparaju point to Article 75 of Italy's written constitution, which enshrines the fact that Italy cannot hold a referendum on anything related to international treaties: "A general referendum may be held to repeal, in whole or in part, a law or a measure having the force of law, when so requested by five hundred thousand voters or five Regional Councils. No referendum may be held on a law regulating taxes, the budget, amnesty or pardon, or a law ratifying an international treaty." Membership of both the European Union and the euro, are by definition international in nature, and as a result, for Italy to give its people a say on leaving either, the constitution would have to be changed. Obviously, that is no easy task and would require a strongly eurosceptic government with a serious will to leave the EU.
The bold is the key part. BI's analysis:
This is the chain of events Naraparaju and Antonucci think needs to happen for Italy to drop out of the EU (emphasis ours): "So, the bar for leaving is high and the chain of events much longer than, say, for the UK to leave the EU. In Italy, a Eurosceptic party would have to win an election with an absolute majority and then set in motion the exit process after having changed the constitution with a two-thirds majority in both chambers or 'just' an absolute majority followed by a referendum. As Eurozone membership is indissolubly linked to EU membership, leaving the EU would also automatically mean leaving the EMU."
The TL;DR: It's simple:
More feed back is appreciated from those of you who study this. But those of you wondering "which currency to buy" just don't - margin req's are going up (again...sigh) in the US for this weekend due to amateurs and silly gambling streaks.

TIF beats on earnings, surges 4%

I recommended this trade in Copy My Trades (damonverial.com). I'll post it below to give you an idea of when and why I make a long call play before earnings:
Damon here.
Today is Black Friday, which means the market stops trading at 1pm. That’s fine, because we aren’t getting in on a specifically timed play. I hope you enjoyed Thanksgiving, by the way.
Let’s get started. I’m looking to take a long position into earnings on TIF. I could write an in-depth earnings analysis here, and I just might do so in Exposing Earning. But you guys get the first peek into my basic thesis before the company reports on Monday; here it is, in a somewhat scatterbrained organization:
SIG, another jewelry company recently reported a beat, suggesting a bullishness in this sector. TIF is a rarity in the jewelry market in that it is the only well-known US brand. The advantage of it being a US company that primarily makes its profit in the US is not having to deal with Forex issues; a strong dollar does not hurt TIF so much.
Fundamentally, we should not predict any surprises in margins or growth. EPS growth has been negative for the past six quarters. That might change this quarter, and if it does, it will be taken as a sign of growth turnaround. We are not banking on that, but it’s a good catalyst.
TIF is going to be presenting forward guidance on its FQ4 during this quarter’s earnings. FQ4 is TIF’s best quarter and the main profit-driver of the company. Guidance should be strong.
Why?
For one, retail sales and spending are picking back up in the US, specifically in the luxury market. But of more interest to TIF investors recently is its flagship store, which brings in 30% of TIF’s sales and 10% of its profits. This store is located right next to the Trump Tower and has been the focus of concerned, nervous TIF investors.
Are the nearby protests reducing sales? Is the red tape preventing customers from entering the store?
If you search the news quickly, the answers seem to be “yes.” But how much of that news is real and how much of it is part of a lingering “blame Trump” mentality in the liberal media? Others have reported unobstructed entrances to the store and strong foot traffic.
This is the typical overreaction you get when an easily understood news item can be interpreted by investors. Overall, if you limit the supply of a luxury item or raise the barriers to obtaining it, you make it more enticing, fueling demand. It’s an abstract concept, certainly moreso than:
“Trump president; neighboring doors hard to open; Trump bad; Chinese tourist scared, no buy jewelry; TIF stock down; my aunt said Apple computers are easy to use so we should buy Apple stock…”
…low-level thinking for low-level traders and investors. Ignore the news, at least on the surface, please.
This is TIF’s strong season. And it covers earnings. The probability that TIF rises on a beat is nearly 100%; the probability that TIF rises on a miss is nearly 50%.
The statistics are on our side regardless of last quarter, which I believe will be good anyhow. The focus is guidance. Management will likely point to everything I just pointed to above: strengthening sales, a possible turnaround in EPS on the way, and a positive spin on the Trump presidency/neighborhood.
If TIF is treated as a luxury stock, it is fairly valued. If it is treated as a retail stock it is undervalued. Either way, this does not put the risk profile against us; rather, it works in our favor, especially with options.
Today will be our last day to open this trade, and as evidenced by Wedneday, many are already buying last-minute. We will too. Here is our play:
Buy TIF Dec16 $75 call
This is an at-the-money call that maximizes our gamma – i.e., we gain the best nonlinear risk/reward profile possible with a long call at this strike. Because TIF is a “reverter” after earnings, it dips a bit after a rally and rises a bit after a fall. We can regain ground if we are wrong, but we should sell immediately if we are right.
Why a pure long call? Simply because options are fairly valued on TIF right now. No need to overcomplicate things, especially seeing as I get follow-up emails every time I send out a complex options strategy; we only have a few hours to open this trade, so we shouldn’t be racking our brains with the reasoning for the strategy.
That’s it for today. Happy trading.

Questions on converting GMT+0 data (Dukascopy) to New York close candles

Hi all,
I downloaded Dukascopy historical data. The data is one hour per file and the time zone is GMT+0. I would like to write some program to convert the tick data to New York close candles, such as four hours and daily. In each week the data starts from 23h Sunday to 22h Friday.
I have several questions on the time zone conversion,
1, No matter what session we talk about, one Forex trading week always contain 24*5=120 hours, right?
2, What's the data in each week should be converted to NY close? Since NY is GMT-5, I think the NY week should start from the sixth hour of the week in the GMT+0 data?
3, Then when is the NY week end in the GMT+0 data?
To be clear, we can think the GMT+0 data is, Sunday: 2 hours, Monday~Thursday: 24 hours each day, Friday: 22 hours Then how to split those 120 hours to 5 candles with NY close?
I used TickStory to generate the NY data, but there is some wrong prices which generate very bad result in my back test, so I would like to generate the data by myself.
Thanks
